On the Shank Eco-farm, Your Family Cow, in Chambersburg, PA,
the cows and their probiotics are part of the family.

Life before probiotics was very different. I didn’t know I was sick. I didn’t know I wasn’t digesting well. I just thought I had a host of physical problems and tagged them with labels such as “growing old” or “female troubles.” But, once our friends convinced us to introduce fermented foods with probiotic bacteria into our diets, my life changed dramatically. The complaints, I thought I had to live with, just went away.

Reading and studying the way people live and eat around the world, I am convinced that many of our common illnesses here in the United States are actually hiding inefficient digestive systems.  Digestive tracts unable to properly function usually lack the three pounds of good bacteria needed to help us digest our food. A lack of good bacteria invites the bad bacteria and seriously debilitates our immune systems.

A fellow blogger, Pick Your Brain, has a great post outlining the particulars, but why isn’t information about building up the gut flora for optimum health the first thing you hear out of your doctor’s mouth when you go to visit? In fact, you have to almost dig for the information while looking in alternative health venues. We are bombarded by pharmaceutical drug advertisements. At the same time, we hear little about the good bacteria necessary to properly sustain our lives. This information about good bacteria ought to be mainstream, not “alternative health” oriented.

Misdiagnosis of faulty digestion is so widespread and
oppressive, one has to ask, “Who stands to gain?”

While years ago, healthy habits were promoted by mainstream media for the common good, now toxic living habits are profiled. For instance, the mainstream media tries to convince us that good food takes too long to fix and our modern schedules demand fast food. Like never before, each of us must gain a knowledge of how our bodies work in order to heal and nurture our way into better living. No longer can we use a blind eye to rely on newspapers, TV, the Federal Government or our medical community to instruct us. And, most importantly, we have to rely on our bodies themselves to tell us when we are feeling good and what constitutes good health. Good health begins with slow food and a fully functioning gut.

The money and time spent on nutrient dense food reaps rewards.

Great sums of money can be made on a massive scale when people eat toxic food and live in a toxic environment. Each of us is really a fine tuned spiritual being in a physical body of chemicals and electrical impulses. If we don’t provide our bodies with the chemicals they need to operate their electrical impulses efficiently, our bodies “don’t work right.” We get sick and have to seek treatment for health complaints.

Health complaints lead to contacting the medical community and here modern society seems to have gone down a path of corporate profit, promoting illness rather than health. Common sense would seem to require checking the old “garbage in garbage out” admonition. Wouldn’t you think a doctor would first inquire about what you eat? How you eat? Your level of exercise? How much sleep you are getting? And whether you get outside into the fresh air everyday? No, by prescribing drugs and ignoring lifestyle, the body gets further and further out of balance. Small problems become big ones. It would appear a toxic population is a revenue generating asset.

And once one studies how the body works and maintains health, the most important requirement seems to be a fulling functioning digestive system. A digestive system that efficiently breaks down food and allows the absorption of essential nutrients requires, so learning how to make and eat traditional foods is a step toward using food as medicine. When the body gets what it needs, in the way that it needs it, being chronically sick is not a daily concern.

The Irish drinking real milk is Sunbonnet Smart.

I enjoy receiving the newsletter from W. C. Douglass, M.D. called “Daily Dose.” As you might expect, it arrives daily in my e-mail box and it always has something of interest. This morning, I was intrigued by a lead article called Ireland Readies Raw Milk Ban. Here it is so you can see what you think about it:

New rules will turn milk lovers into outlaws
by W.C. Douglass, M.D.

Ireland’s famous fresh dairy products are about to go sour: After years of allowing unregulated raw milk sales, the government is getting ready to cut it all off practically overnight.

The total ban on raw milk sales might even be taking effect as you read this.

What’s amazing here isn’t just the 180-degree turn on raw milk from complete freedom to a complete ban — it’s the fact that Ireland is actually living, breathing PROOF that raw milk is safe and healthy.

Since the last ban was lifted in 2006, the Irish have turned to farm-fresh milk with the gusto they normally reserve for Guinness. One farmer told the Irish Times this summer that he went from selling no raw milk at all to 400 liters a week in no time flat.

Yet despite the growing raw milk consumption, there have been no major outbreaks of illness or disease.

And that’s not just the luck o’ the Irish at work — it’s because responsibly produced raw milk is not the risky cocktail you’ve been led to believe. In fact, bans like this one aren’t about safety at all — and they never are.

All countries with raw milk restrictions and bans — including the United States — have one thing in common, and it’s not healthier people: It’s a powerful dairy industry. Pasteurization is the hammer that industry uses to nail down control of everyone’s milk money.

Without pasteurization laws, farmers can sell direct to consumers and earn a good living. With those laws in place, however, most farmers have no choice but to sell their milk to Big Dairy operations for pennies on the dollar.

Farmers aren’t the only ones getting the shaft here — consumers also lose big, because pasteurization kills everything in milk worth having: powerful natural probiotics and healthy dairy proteins as well as key vitamins and minerals.

Those nutrients make raw milk an immune-boosting tonic that can beat allergies and asthma, fight illness and disease, and even cure autism in children.

To my Irish readers — and everyone else who has to fight for the right to drink raw milk — don’t let the authorities push you around. Get your raw milk however you can.

As Dr. Douglass indicates in his article above, there are restrictions against of selling unpasteurized, non-homogenized milk in the United States. This is true. Some states freely allow raw milk sales, while others totally ban the sale, while the states in between restrict the sale in some way. Sale of raw milk went relatively unnoticed for years.  As the public has realized the health benefits of drinking real milk, however, the commercialized high throughput product has suffered in sales and profit. Now, in some states, raw milk drinkers have to fight for the right to choose their milk product. And so, we are working hard for the freedom to choose just like they are fighting in Ireland now.

In Ireland, there are many united groups of raw milk drinkers, just as there are here in the United States. The Irish groups’ missions mirror our own groups when they say, The Irish government intends to ban the sale of raw milk before the end of 2011. We want the right to choose and are calling for the government to introduce fair regulations rather than an outright ban…We believe that everyone has a right to drink one of Irelands best products; milk – in its pure unadulterated creamy and delicious form – raw milk. The choice is the key point here… Informed consumers should have the right to decide for themselves what they eat and drink.”

Relying on nature to take the lead in health care brings results.

Once you start realizing how important food is as a “medicine,” you will surely run into Dr. Joseph M. Mercola, a medical doctor and surgeon, who is well versed in health care from an organic viewpoint. Dr. Mercola is well known as a New York Times Best Selling Author and openly lists his credentials, which you can review by clicking here.

Dr. Mercola lectures about dangers to health as well as promoting beneficial ways to protect the body and mind in a proactive manner. I signed up on his web site for his newsletter and always learn something new when it arrives in the e-mails. This article on McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets arrived last week and I am including it here for your convenience. I want to get this information out to you as soon as possible, just in case you still believe taking a child to McDonald’s is a good, fun thing to do. We thought so as well, but changed our minds once we learned about the use of processed foods in restaurant settings:

The Chicken Which Should be Banned

Posted By Dr. Mercola | November 08 2010

Do you put dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent made of silicone, in your chicken dishes?

How about tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a chemical preservative so deadly that just five grams can kill you?

These are just two of the ingredients in a McDonalds Chicken McNugget. Only 50 percent of a McNugget is actually chicken. The other 50 percent includes corn derivatives, sugars, leavening agents and completely synthetic ingredients….

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

There’s no doubt about it. Processed food like that from McDonald’s is just not part of a healthful diet – in fact, much of it cannot even pass for real food.

After reviewing the above article I am very grateful I can say I have never had a Chicken McNugget from McDonald’s. If you can’t say the same at least you can commit to never having another one again.

This sentiment was echoed by Federal Judge Robert Sweet in a lawsuit against the restaurant chain back in 2003 when he said:

“Chicken McNuggets, rather than being merely chicken fried in a pan, are a McFrankenstein creation of various elements not utilized by the home cook.”

At the time, Time Magazine reported that Judge Sweet “questioned whether customers understood the risks of eating McDonald’s chicken over regular chicken.”

That was seven years ago, and I still wonder whether or not McDonald’s customers truly understand the risks they take when consuming fast food on a regular basis.

If you missed Morgan Spurlock’s documentary Super-Size Me, I highly recommend you watch it with your entire family. It’s a real-life illustration of just how dangerous – life threatening, in fact – an excessive fast food diet can really be. And “excessive” consumption is likely far less than you imagine: Eating fast food just twice a week DOUBLES your risk of developing insulin resistance, compared to eating it just once a week, for example. Insulin resistance, as I’ve discussed on many occasions, is one of THE primary driving factors behind most of the diseases we currently struggle with, from diabetes to cancer and heart disease…

The truth is, McDonald’s fare contain non-food ingredients that can seriously harm your health.

This shouldn’t come as any great surprise. After all, how healthful can something be that shows no signs of decomposing after being left on a counter for more than a decade?

Clearly there’s more chemicals in there than actual, real foodstuff.

You’ve just read a small part of the whole article. For the rest of it, click here.
